Refunds: Once we have received your registration and payment, you will receive an email confirmation noting your enrollment in the class you have chosen. If you need to cancel any time prior to 3 weeks from the first day of the TESOL class, you will receive a full refund minus an $80 cancellation fee. Cancellations within the final 3 weeks before the class cannot be refunded. However, in such a case you may keep your booking and simply transfer it to another scheduled TESOL class within a 12 month period. If for some unforeseen reason the Canadian Institute of English must cancel a TESOL class (such as a last minute emergency illness of instructor or an insufficient number of students), a full refund (in the currency you paid in) will be provided to all students who are fully paid and registered at the time of cancellation. We recommend you purchase refundable tickets and consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. The Canadian Institute of English cannot be held responsible for losses due to currency fluctuations, travel or accommodation expenses or loss of work days.
English has become the international language of trade, diplomacy and communication. If you speak English this could be your greatest asset because there are literally millions of people around the world who are desperate to learn English. Our advanced TESOL certificate program will equip you to teach these people successfully.
Our students are now teaching in over 40 countries around the world – some of them were hired with little or no teaching experience, and others on the basis that their CIE TESOL certificate was the first part of their Bachelor’s Degree in TESOL. We often hear back from past students themselves or the schools that hire them letting us know of job openings or requests for more teachers.
It is difficult to give definite rules, as each school and educational institution has it’s own requirements, but our general experience has been that the CIE TESOL certificate alone is enough to find work in the following countries and areas:
Some countries now require English teachers to have a degree before they will grant them a work visa. These are:
If you plan to teach English in one of these countries, and are interested in obtaining an affordable degree which can be completed by distance, please visit our USAT site.
PLEASE NOTE: The information given above is not meant to be an authoritative guide as to the requirements for teaching English in each area of the world, but is rather a general guide based on the collective experience of our students and those who work for the CIE. If you are interested in teaching in a specific country, we recommend that you first research what the current requirements for teaching in that country are. A good place to start is the local embassy of that country. They should be able to provide you with the necessary information.
Teaching English in the US and Canada: Although some of our students have gone on to teach English in the US and Canada, our TESOL certificate is primarily designed for those wanting to teach English overseas. Schools in native-English speaking countries like the US and Canada now expect their teachers to have very high qualifications, usually requiring a degree in education – sometimes even from the very state where their institution is based. If you don’t have these qualifications, and you wanted to work in the US, Canada or any other English speaking country, you would likely have to work as a self-employed private teacher, working with immigrants in the area where you live. Another option would be for you to teach English online to students based overseas. Please see below for more information.
YES – in recent years many of our students have gone on to teach English online. Although the hourly rate for teaching online is lower than for teaching in a school or privately, many prefer it because it means they can organize their own work schedule and don’t need to travel to work. If you work for a company that provides online English lessons, they will usually assign you students according to your schedule.
Many of our students have enjoyed teaching English online. We have compiled a list of online schools that have been recommended to us.
YES – our TESOL graduates are working in over 40 different countries around the world, including Canada and the U.S. Many international institutes contact us to request teachers who have been trained through our intensive TESOL program.
A TESOL certificate is a necessary addition to a degree (in education or other) if you plan to teach English in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, China, Taiwan, South Korea or Thailand. The certificate can stand alone in most other countries and/or if you wish to teach volunteer classes or privately from your home.
For information on how to attain your degree while working abroad or in Canada/U.S., please visit our USAT site.
The CIE TESOL course is a 40 hour teaching program. In general, our graduates are finding good success often using just this certificate alone to get work teaching for schools or online.
However in recent years, 120+ hours of training has come to be expected by many schools. If you would like to build on your CIE TESOL certificate and reach a higher level of teacher training hours, we will soon have an additional online course you will be able complete from anywhere.
The law in some countries (such as Mexico) requires that all educational certificates and diplomas be authenticated and/or receive an apostille mark, or the Great Seal, before they can be recognized in that country.
Each country’s requirements are continually prone to change and the CIE cannot keep abreast of the requirements for each country in the world, so we recommend that you check with the embassy of the country you wish to teach in to learn what requirements you will need to meet. Those countries that do require certificates to be authenticated usually fall into two categories: those who participated in the Hague Treaty and those that did not. Members of the Hague treaty will require your certificate to have the Apostille mark, whereas countries that didn’t participate in the Hague Treaty will need to be authenticated is a similar manner, without actually calling it an Apostille.
The procedure to get the Apostille or authentication usually involves two steps. First, you will need to get your certificate notarized. The type of notarization you need is called a jurat, where the Notary Public will confirm your identity and that you have made a true, valid copy of your certificate. Second, you will need to send this copy of your certificate with it's attached notarization along with a cover letter explaining which country you intend to use it in to the respective Secretary of State's office to confirm that the Notary Public was valid at the time of notarization. They will affix the Apostille to the notarization and send it back to you.
For more information on doing this from Canada, a non-Hague Treaty country, please refer to this pdf:
You will walk away on Friday afternoon with your TESOL certificate. We can also provide SLAM certificates (Second Language Acquisition Methodology) to those who may be planning to use the methods to teach languages other than English, such as French, Spanish, ASL, etc.
SLAM stands for (Second Language Acquisition Methodology) – which can apply to teaching ANY language, while TESOL stands for Teaching ENGLISH to Speakers of Other Languages and only applies to teaching English. Even though the focus of the TESOL class is the best methods to teach English to speakers of other languages, there are often those who are bi-lingual or even tri-lingual who plan (or who may later decide) to use the methods they learn to teach a different language.
If you are fluent enough in another language to be able to teach conversation, then it can be beneficial to request the SLAM certificate. You will have something on paper showing that you have taken a language acquisition and methodology course, and that you will apply those methods to the teaching of the language.
Your fluency in the chosen language is demonstrated when you teach some of that language to the others in class while utilizing and practicing some of the methods.
It is best to request any additional SLAM certificates when you register. You may also request these during the week of the course you are attending. The cost for each SLAM certificate is $20 US. However, ordering a certificate after the course is $45 US.
Yes. If you have lost your certificate, or would just like another copy, we can reprint it for you and mail it anywhere in the world. Also, after having taken the course, you may decide to request an additional SLAM certificate for another language you are proficient in, or upgrade your certificate to reflect 120 hours of teacher training.
The cost is $45 US for the first certificate, and $25 for any additional certificates, or for a digital PDF copy. The prices for hardcopies include postage, and take about 4-6 weeks for us to process and mail. Please contact us first (email@example.com) if you require rush or expedited service.
Yes. You or a potential employer can verify your certificate by visiting this page and submitting a request.
Please allow up to 48 hours for the verification process.
They are all acronyms that refer to teaching English. TESOL is a politically correct acronym that translates into Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or Teaching English as a Second Or learned Language.

Our students are responsible for locating their own accommodations. All our classes are held in areas where it is easy to find a safe, low cost and comfortable hotel or motel.
Our classes usually run from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm. On Friday we aim to finish a couple of hours early. You will be provided with a little homework each night, but the majority of the learning will be carried out at the class.
If you are enthusiastic, with a good grasp of the English language – we welcome you! Our students range from those who have recently graduated from High School, to retirees wanting to travel and earn money, to those looking for a new direction or career change.
We also require that our students speak, read and write English fluently.
No High School Diploma? You may still attend, but we recommend you obtain your G.E.D. here (General Equivalency Diploma for adults)
We require that those taking our class speak, read and write English fluently. However “fluent” does not mean “perfect”. If you are a non-native English speaker that has a good grasp of the English language and is competent enough to understand the training provided at our class, we welcome you.
Of course, it is impossible to learn everything there is to learn about teaching a language in just a week. For that matter, it is also impossible to learn everything you would need to know in a month or even a year. When the ‘learning’ really sets in is once you step foot in a classroom or in front of a student. Interestingly, those who have taken longer courses (before they took ours) said that they had a lot of knowledge and theory, but had no idea of what to actually DO with 30 students for 3 hours.
This is probably the biggest difference between us and other TESOL classes. We focus primarily on METHODS and use extremely interactive and effective ways of getting each and every student personally involved in the learning process – you learn by ‘doing’, not by ‘hearing’. We find that this approach, instead of hours upon hours of lecturing, theory, pedagogy and useless information, is many times more beneficial. Because the program is based upon the latest research in ‘Applied Neuroscience’ (how the brain actually learns), it turns you into the most effective language teacher that you can personally be.
We also bear in mind that many of our students are already thousands of dollars in debt from their college or university education and don’t have thousands to throw at long and drawn out TESOL courses – they need to get working.
This course is the brainchild of Dr. Harry Cotton (Cert. Ed., Dip. Ed., BA, Cert. TESL, M.Ed. TESOL, Doctoral Degree in Neuroscience of Second Language Acquisition). He will share with you his personal experience from over 30 years of teaching on 5 continents. He has been the sole instructor in Canada and internationally for over 10 years. He has been described as “no other teacher in the world today”. He demonstrates excellent teaching methods by example. Should there arise a scheduling conflict or other unforeseen circumstances, and Dr. Cotton cannot teach a course, a trained and certified associate will take his place.
NO – This is an advanced, intensive, fast-paced program. We have found it counter productive to hold classes in the evening. Most people are tired and exhausted from a full day spent at work or school. It is worth your time to dedicate a full week solely to mastering the latest TESOL methodology. In addition, you would not receive the full benefit of the intensive and interactive program through correspondence.
Just your own pen and notebook, or tablet. Everything else will be provided at the class. For lunch arrangements please check the details on the venue where you will be attending the class. This information can be found on our Class Dates/Locations page.
Keep in mind that this is an interactive seminar where you will be doing a lot of moving around and getting in and out of your seat. Please dress comfortably and casually.
You can pay directly on our website by secure credit card transaction. Please click the "Enroll" button below a class listing. The registration details can be filled in at the bottom of the class’ information page. Please contact us if you have any further questions or difficulties
YES – we would be delighted if you attend our class for the second time. If you took the class several years ago you will be happy to find that our class has been streamlined, features more teaching methods and more up to date information on teaching English around the world. We offer a $150 discount to those taking the class for a second time. This amount will be refunded to you after registering for the class of your choice and verification of your past attendance.
